Where did this job title come from anyway? Hollywood? Affairs with secretaries are a staple of business life, but at least there’s some official separation between the boss and a secretary or administrative assistant; both are working for the same entity. Labeling someone a personal assistant changes the relationship and makes the person the vassal of the boss, someone who works primarily for the man rather than for the organization. Administrative assistants are people who help the boss do his job; personal assistants are more likely to be seen as someone to be used by the boss for whatever he wants. Note how Lamb just thought Elena was his for the taking. That thinking coincided almost exactly with the beginning of the affair. Perhaps it’s time for these show-time pastors to rethink that relationship."

I am personally quite tired of rock-star "pastors". I've said for a long time that Washington is Hollywood for ugly people; what passes for the Evangelical Church these days is Hollywood for wolves.....fat, loud, worldly, self-aggrandizing wolves in untucked t-shirts ripping bits of scripture from context. Wall Street took the whole world 'for a ride' and now a handful of Wall Street's erstwhile princelings have shifted ceremoniously into US Government service to 'fix' the problem with a 'toolbox' containing a notional two trillion dollars. The plan is to convert the Internet into a cable-like system, where customers sign up for specific web sites, and then pay to visit sites beyond a cutoff point.

From my browsing (on the currently free Internet) I have discovered that the 'demise' of the free Internet is slated for 2010 in Canada, and two years later around the world. Canada is seen a good choice to implement such shameful and sinister changes, since Canadians are viewed as being laissez fair, politically uninformed and an easy target.

The corporate marauders will iron out the wrinkles in Canada and then spring the new, castrated version of the Internet on the rest of the world, probably with little fanfare, except for some dire warnings about the 'evil' of the Internet (free) and the CEO's spouting about 'safety and security'. These buzzwords usually work pretty well.

What will the Internet look like in Canada in 2010? I suspect that the ISP's will provide a "package" program as companies like Cogeco currently do. Customers will pay for a series of websites as they do now for their television stations. Television stations will be available on-line as part of these packages, which will make the networks happy since they have lost much of the younger market which are surfing and chatting on their computers in the evening. However, as is the case with cable television now, if you choose something that is not part of the package, you know what happens. You pay extra.

And this is where the Internet (free) as we know it will suffer almost immediate, economic strangulation. Thousands and thousands of Internet sites will not be part of the package so users will have to pay extra to visit those sites! In just an hour or two it is possible to easily visit 20-30 sites or more while looking for information. Just imagine how high these costs will be.

At present, the world condemns China because that country restricts certain websites. "They are undemocratic; they are removing people's freedom; they don't respect individual rights; they are censoring information, are some of the comments we hear. But what Bell Canada and Telus have planned for Canadians is much worse than that. They are planning the death of the Internet (free) as we know it, and I expect they'll be hardly a whimper from Canadians.

Google Search: Is Astrology Bullshit?

Creative energy? On a subzero Winnipeg morning in 1997, I cut across the hospital emergency room to shave a few minutes off my frigid commute. Swinging open the door, I stepped into a nightmare: the ER overflowed with elderly people on stretchers, waiting for admission. Some, it turned out, had waited five days. The air stank with sweat and urine. Right then, I began to reconsider everything that I thought I knew about Canadian health care. I soon discovered that the problems went well beyond overcrowded ERs. Patients had to wait for practically any diagnostic test or procedure, such as the man with persistent pain from a hernia operation whom we referred to a pain clinic—with a three-year wait list; or the woman needing a sleep study to diagnose what seemed like sleep apnea, who faced a two-year delay; or the woman with breast cancer who needed to wait four months for radiation therapy, when the standard of care was four weeks."

City Journal....mmmmmmm, that's good journalism.

Reason Magazine - The Politics of Prohibition

Reason Magazine - The Politics of Prohibition: "So, if the history of alcohol prohibition is a guide, drug prohibition will not end merely because there are many sound, sensible and humane reasons to end it. The job of a businessman is to orchestrate productive enterprises that efficiently coordinate people, resources, and tools to create valuable products. Businessmen profit when they bring out valuable products at desirable prices; thus, they are continually making more, better, and cheaper products for everyone to purchase. Businessmen profit when they make others more productive; thus, they are continually seeking to create new jobs that can add to their bottom line, and providing their workers with as many productivity-enhancing tools and technologies as they can. Businessmen's pursuit of profit has been the driving force behind the incalculable increase in our standard of living over the last 150 years--and economic history shows that the freer they are left to make money, the greater the increase in productivity and wages at all levels."

Just in case you forgot to read Adam Smith, or use your brain since it was issued.

Annie

Obama Hails a Unicorn: "Overall, Hillary appeared to be the only Democrat even dimly aware that there will eventually be a general election. In Sicko, Moore paid the Cuban regime the ultimate compliment. Taking at face value its claim to provide superior medical service to Cubans and breathing fresh life into official propaganda that health care is one of the great achievements of the Cuban revolution, Moore cut a generous advertisement for Castro's one-party state. Such was the success of the Cuban system, Moore enthused, that the country even dispatched doctors abroad to treat the sick of needy nations."

Just yesterday on NPR, I heard an expose on some American girls who had just returned from her medical training in Cuba. She was enthused and said something to the effect that "Cuba has some of the best medical care in the world!" She is now a "doctor" and is planning on serving in underprivileged areas. On its face, that sounds great; that she went to school on the commies' (or rather their slave's) dime and will now repay the American poor with her ability to serve in low paying areas due to her complete lack of student loans.

After her interview, a doctor from GW came on and seemed pretty un-biased about the whole thing but he did make it clear that Cuba's medical system, while considered one of the "best in the world," was pretty low-tech and primitive. So, basically this dumb-ass chick from America goes to Cuba and gets "free" medical school while Cubans are living on rice and starving for a piece of damned meat. Even if marijuana itself causes minimal harm, it is a dangerous substance because it leads to the use of 'harder drugs' like heroin, LSD, and cocaine.

Fact: Marijuana does not cause people to use hard drugs. What the gateway theory presents as a causal explanation is a statistic association between common and uncommon drugs, an association that changes over time as different drugs increase and decrease in prevalence. Marijuana is the most popular illegal drug in the United States today. Therefore, people who have used less popular drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and LSD, are likely to have also used marijuana. Most marijuana users never use any other illegal drug. Indeed, for the large majority of people, marijuana is a terminus rather than a gateway drug."

Actually, the real "gateway drug" is tobacco. That and that spinning thing kids do until they fall down dizzy. We live in a strange world where I ca legally get hammered on vodka nightly and smoke a pack of cigs per day but the possession of one joint can provide me with a criminal record.

'Bong Hits 4 Jesus' case limits student rights - CNN.com

'Bong Hits 4 Jesus' case limits student rights - CNN.com: "Morse, who attended arguments in March, told CNN at the time: 'I was empowered to enforce the school board's written policies at that time aimed at keeping illegal substances out of the school environment.'"

Signs promoting the inhalation of Mary Jane are NOT an illegal substance. In contrast with, say, a general rule against banners at school events, this topic-specific, viewpoint-based ban encourages suppression of dissenting opinions.

While students in school do not have the same First Amendment rights as adults, the Supreme Court has emphasized that they do not "shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate." That's why two of the justices who ruled against Frederick said in a concurring opinion that the Court's new rationale for censorship should apply only to pro-drug speech, as opposed to political or social commentary.

So, I ask, how does pro-legalization speech differ from the political or social. Drug policy in this country is inherently political in that it is the politicians who enact such policies and the social ramifications of the "War on Drugs," i.e mass incarceration and disparate and arbitrary sentencing, is both seemingly a quintessential question of both political expediency and social policy. Many drugs are currently illegal, and at one time, it was illegal to intermarry between races, educate blacks, and allow women to vote. So is the Court saying that free speech only applies to subjects, the content of which, are currently legal? This flies in the face of the very foundation of the 1st A. Petitioning and speech against the status quo is, or was, once enshrined as the first step in changing public opinion. What's next? No speech aimed at ANYTHING currently illegal. TJ and the other Framers are definitely rolling over, bones and all. More to come.

Best Article Ever. Okay PETA, have fun theorizing about the environment from the coffee bar.

PETA TO AL GORE: YOU CAN’T BE A MEAT-EATING ENVIRONMENTALIST
Tue Mar 06 2007 17:08:05 ET

The Most ‘Inconvenient Truth’: According to U.N., Animals Raised for Food Generate More Greenhouse Gases Than All Cars and Trucks Combined

Norfolk, Va. — This morning, PETA sent a letter to former vice president Al Gore explaining to him that the best way to fight global warming is to go vegetarian and offering to cook him faux “fried chicken” as an introduction to meat-free meals. In its letter, PETA points out that Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth—which starkly outlines the potentially catastrophic effects of global warming and just won the Academy Award for “Best Documentary”—has failed to address the fact that the meat industry is the largest contributor to greenhouse-gas emissions.

In the letter, PETA points out the following:

· The effect that our meat addiction is having on the climate is truly staggering. In fact, in its recent report “Livestock’s Long Shadow—Environmental Issues and Options,” the United Nations determined that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined.

· Researchers at the University of Chicago have determined that switching to a vegan diet is more effective in countering global warming than switching from a standard American car to a Toyota Prius.

PETA also reminds Gore that his critics love to question whether he practices what he preaches and suggests that by going vegetarian, he could cut down on his contribution to global warming and silence his critics at the same time.

“The single best thing that any of us can do to for our health, for animals, and for the environment is to go vegetarian,” says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. “The best and easiest way for Mr. Gore to show his critics that he’s truly committed to fighting global warming is to kick his meat habit immediately.”

Greenhouse effect is a myth, say scientists | the Daily Mail

Greenhouse effect is a myth, say scientists | the Daily Mail: "Research said to prove that greenhouse gases cause climate change has been condemned as a sham by scientists."

Wow, I'm not even a scientist and I knew this fifteen years ago. However, unlike in WWII there was never a shred of doubt as to whether or not we would be victorious over Saddam’s army. He might have been able to fight a few battles, but ultimately victory was guaranteed. Where the administration failed was in recognizing that, while we would in the short term be seen as liberators by much of the country, we would soon be seen as occupiers, and we would need a good counterinsurgency strategy in place, because the best time to fight an insurgency is before one begins. We had nothing of the sort, because the administration had been assured by Chalabi that citizens would be throwing flowers at their feet. Because of this we didn’t send in enough troops to control the country. We didn’t start monitoring the borders until over a year post-invasion. As the insurgency grew, the administration did not change tactics, and instead got on TV to assure everyone that this was just a few “dead-enders,” remnants of the old regime who would soon be put in their place. As it did before the invasion, ideology trumped reality once again. Bremer dismissed the Iraqi Army, and then unilaterally banned anyone with an association with the Ba’ath Party from having anything to do with the new government. What does that say about our policy makers and our punditry who argue otherwise.

Muslim cleric tells pope to apologize - World - The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

Muslim cleric tells pope to apologize - World - The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

Pope: Fuck you and god bless.

Interesting

Islamists=Bible Heroes?: "“Blind Samson, his hairy growth returning, commits an act of suicidal terrorism as he destroys the pillars of the pagan temple,” Chaplain Gray wrote of the Old Testament hero, drawing a parallel between the ancient Jewish warrior and modern Islamists."

Fun analogy in that Sampson's blindness is juxtaposed with the "blindness" of the philistines if failing to recognize the growing threat of his growing locks. When in America, don't do as the Romans did: "By the middle of the first century BCE the Roman Republic had vastly expanded its authority throughout the Mediterranean. As Rome exercised political and military control over more and more territory, political rivalries began to tear at the constitutional fabric of the Roman Republic, and eventually civil wars broke out, leading to cries for a more powerful central government.

In 49 BCE, the Roman Senate revived the office of dictator. In previous centuries, the Senate elected a dictator in times of emergency, granting him unchecked power and complete impunity. The one restriction was that a dictator could hold power for only six months. An intimidated Roman Senate made Julius Caesar dictator, giving him the authority to subdue his political rival Pompey. In 44 BCE the Roman Senate named the victorious Caesar 'dictator perpetuus'—dictator for life."

I've long contended that America is a quasi-fascist state. I also have no problem with the political theory as I mosty agree that a sort of facism is well suited to proper governance and nation building. It can move him to visit the sick when he would rather be at home watching television, to resist gossiping, to give more charity than he otherwise would, to show honor to parents who may not deserve it, and so much more. The U.S and Japan (the latter not even a permanent member of the Security Council) pay over 40 percent of the costs. (If you are a New Yorker, the people who work at the UN owe the city nineteen millions in parking fines.) China and Russia, incidentally, pay 2.053 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively. Ultimately, the entire UN financing system is nothing but a global form of wealth redistribution that entails, as one observer said, taking money from the poor in the richest countries to give it to the richest in poor countries. Aside from the idiocy of this claim -- war has solved slavery, ended the Holocaust, destroyed Japanese Fascism, preserved half the Korean peninsula from near-genocide, and saved Israel from extinction, among other noble achievements -- the claim offers no support to those who do engage in war.:

"But most of the Left does not want the troops to win in Iraq. The Left's message is this: 'You troops may think you are winning; you may think you are doing good and moral things in Iraq; you may believe you are fighting the worst human beings of our age and protecting us against the scourge of Islamic terror. But we on the Left believe none of that. We believe this war is being fought for oil and for Halliburton and other corporations; we believe you are waging a war that is both illegal and immoral; we believe you have invaded a country for no good reason and have killed a hundred thousand Iraqis [the Left's generally mentioned number] for no good reason; but, hey, we sure do support you.'

Honest people on the Left need to understand that the two positions are not reconcilable. A German citizen during World War II could not have argued: 'The Nazi regime's army is engaged in an evil war of aggression and is slaughtering millions of innocent people, and I therefore completely oppose this war, but I sure do support the Nazi troops.'"

The Decline of Europe

"In a June 23 speech before the E.U. Parliament, British Prime Minister Tony Blair delivered a stinging rebuke to European critics who charged him with wanting to abandon Europe's social model.'

What type of social model is it, Blair pointedly asked, that has 20 [million] unemployed in Europe, productivity rates falling behind those of the USA; that is allowing more science graduates to be produced by India than by Europe; and that, on any relative index of a modern economy - skills, R&D, patents, IT, is going down not up... Of the top 20 universities in the world today, only two are now in Europe.

Blair had it quite right. The Western European welfare states are very much in need of political reforms. Our economies are stagnating, our citizens have stopped working, and our big governments are as bureaucratic and inefficient as ever. Indeed, if the prime minister can be properly accused of anything, it is indulging in understatement: Unemployment in the European welfare states is actually higher than Blair indicates in his speech.

Rather than tackling unemployment, however, European governments have learned to hide it. For instance, in Sweden, state officials claim that the unemployment rate stands at 5.5 percent. But a recent report by an economist working for Swedens largest labor union gives this rosy prognosis, showing that the real unemployment rate is between 20 and 25 percent. Things are little in better in the big powers of Western Europe'Germany and France where official statistics have for many years showed double digit unemployment rates.

Why unemployment rates are so high in Western Europe poses no mystery. Our governments pay citizens when they dont work and tax ":

by Nima Sanandaji

Dumb-Ass and a Picture too

London bombings should serve as a mirror to Iraq

The London Bombings

"Saddam and the terrorists have killed a hundred times more Muslims than American forces. Why? Because when they come to take our property, they don't want to risk buckshot in their butts.":

Since I've yet to hear it or read it, I'll interpret the message that SCOTUS has been sending loud and clear to the people (the would be the voters) or our great nation. In upholding the BLATANTLY unconstitutional restrictions on speech codified by the McCain-Feingold law (AKA The 100% incumbent reelection law), the Court made the following arguement: We, the President and the COngress have all sworn to uphold the Constitution. The President (who signed the law) and the Congress are duly elected by You (the people), ergo, You, by electing these bozos have stamped the law with at minimum, the imprimateur of constitutionality. It's a bad arguement and a major change from Warren style activism, yet SCOTUS dropped the hint....Loudly.

Next came Kelo. The message, again, is that the condemners in Nwe London were duly elected. There was no question as to the legitimacy of the town council's election and therefore, they werer duly appointed to exercise the duties and rights of their posts, one of which is to exercise emminent domain. (Yes, I know damned well that the "public use" has been stretched). However, the fact remains that the New London city Council only exercised a right granted to it by You. IF You don't like it, vote them out, stage a referendum and recall them. The Court is not the proper venue for discussions and arguements about politics and we have all fallen into the trap of thinking, like the left, that the electorial process can be circumvented through the judicial process.

Shame on You and me. We voted for these tax dollar hungry, speech restricting idiots and guess what.........we keep voting for them. With Palestinian Arabs increasingly making use of female suicide bombers, we've often wondered what they get in heaven. Now we have the answer, thanks to a report in London's Sunday Telegraph from an Israeli prison:
One of the inmates, Ayat Allah Kamil, 20, from Kabatya, told me why she had wanted to become a martyr: 'Because of my religion. I'm very religious. For the holy war [jihad] there's no difference between men and women shaid [martyrs].'

According to the Koran, male martyrs are welcomed to Paradise by 72 beautiful virgins. Ayat, as with many of the women she is incarcerated with, believes that a woman martyr 'will be the chief of the 72 virgins, the fairest of the fair.'

That is to say, the highest aspiration for a fundamentalist Palestinian girl is murder, suicide and prostitution."

Satan.

nbc4.com - News - High Court Gives Split Decisions On Ten Commandments

ANd Buying Qurans for Gitmo detanees dopesn't violate the 1st?!

The jurisprudence coming from this court, this year, is increadible. It really merits serious consideration as to why there is such a multi-pronged attack on the judeo-Christian foundations of our contry. Yes, it's true, the ONLY reason America is what it is today stemms form the detribalization and ethical mores promulgated and mandated by Christianity. Old Europe owes its glorious past to the same. Today is a sad day, a very sad day.

I'm buying a 9mm, two additional shot-guns and hoarding ammo; starting today. The war, while not quite declared is inevitable and I shall, to my dying day, protect my country, its history, its future, and my property. I dare any state or federal organ to attempt to execute a search warrant at my place of residence. The recent string of supreme court cases, and congressional action restricting speech (see McCain-Feingold) has proven to me that the citizenry is lost and our elected leaders are power hungry and unbalanced.

Jesus, I've really got to get motivated to get my neighbors pissed off and scared of the reality I see. By definition, education reflects values. What other than values determines what you chose to teach a child, what books you assign to read, and indeed your very sense of why you are educating the child?"

This is why we MUST get our kids out of public schools. There shouldn't be one left within 5 years of today. ALL education should be private, chosen by the parents or competent guardian, and continued to be financed from the public treasury. Invest in children, not the education lobby. Yes, pay the teachers, yes pay them well (as if we're not already), but STOP paying anyone for this mediocre shit we call education. It's indoctrination and indoctrination is fine as long as its not encouraginf dependence on Big Gov as it is today.

Atrocious analogy -- The Washington Times

"Just for the record, some 15 million to 30 million Soviets died in the gulag; some 6 million Jews died in the Nazi camps; some 2 million Cambodians -- one-third of the country's population -- died in the killing fields. Nobody's died in Gitmo, not even from having Christina Aguilera played to them excessively loudly. The comparison is deranged, and deeply insulting not just to the U.S. military but to the millions of relatives of those dead Russians, Jews and Cambodians, who, unlike Mr. Durbin, know what real atrocities are.
Had Mr. Durbin said, 'Why, these atrocities are so terrible you would almost believe it was an account of the activities of my distinguished colleague Robert C.
